it was received so poorly. I guess many people want escapism or fantasy and don't want to look at the soul of America. What they see might not be very nice. For the same reason that great books like John Updike's POOR HOUSE FAIR was never made into a movie. It was released almost at the same time as David Lean's RYAN'S DAUGHTER which was also poorly received by audiences. Audiences were changing I believe shifting from middle aged to young. Another one I'm looking for is BOUND FOR GLORY on blue ray. Ray

...soured the boxoffice from bigoted toughnecks like Fonda's powerful patriarch. I've met a few, and they really can be "bigger than life", with wicked humor.I really liked how the "long haired college BOY" was being ribbed by Fonda - all the while being the MAN on the side with Lee Remick.
Great tone and dynamics throughout - politically incorrect far before the term was coined.
(I've seen the DVD available on line - and will eventually have to procure a copy.)
I liked "Ryans Daughter" as well - good is good regardless of popularity.
