Both Tarantino and Malick have produced films which have done very well (for "art" films) without big stars. You think Tarantino would risk wrecking the film of his career (his description) by having a mediocre lead? Or that Malick, in one of his very infrequent films would?
Fact is Pitt has earned his emerging reputation as a serious actor in several roles, one of which is in current release.
If either of you can show any previous cynical casting by either director, go ahead.
