I think Terrance Malick is one of the greats working today. I don't think he's lost his touch either.
But, remember: it's a business. Malick wants people to see his movies. He wants bodies in the seats, not just critics.
Malick wanted John Travolta who was red hot at the time for "Days of Heaven" but he was not available.
I think he's alot like Hitchcock in that actors are cattle. You call upon them to perform a certain function. If they can do it, fine.

seem wooden. The dialogue a train-wreck, too. That girl with the speech impediment narrating in, "Days of Heaven" would have sunk it all by herself (but she did have lots of help).
