The real deal. Best movie I've seen in 2009.
A harrowing tale of Central Americans illegally immigrating to the U.S. The study focuses on two individuals---one from Honduras coming for more opportunity, one from Mexico fleeing his gangland past.
It's obvious that the movie wasn't screened and altered according to audience response. Brutal but extremely authentic. Just extraordinary. It's not often I really care about the main protagonists in a movie. It grabs you and won't let go. High recommended. YMMV.
Follow Ups:
Just got back from seeing it. This one is memorable. At its best, a movie can take you deep into a different culture, and this one does that brilliantly. The music, the scenery and the gang tattoos are enough on their own to recommend it. The story itself is not completely convincing, but there is some moving human drama. But the screen is filled with memorable images throughout, and the soundtrack pulses. Really good.
