This is an indie movement spearheaded by filmmaker Andrew Bujalski (Boston, Harvard) which centers on the lives of disaffected middle-class, 20-early-30's urban white professionals. Not much actually happens in his first two films, "Funny Ha Ha," and "Mutual Appreciation," though I actually made it through both of them just because the sheer ineptitude of the characters, their incredibly self-conscious posturing, and the grossly overstated awkwardness of the interactions were amusing (perhaps not purposefully so much?).
I have to say I mostly enjoyed the non-professional actors or more specifically actresses. It was like going on dates with lovely, non-Hollywood women that.... well, looked healthy, intelligent, and interesting--- in other words, sexy as hell!
Being non-professionals, they were natural, too, which is very hard for professional actors to achieve these days with mannerisms having become standard fare.
I can think of a worse way to spend an hour-and-a-half than falling in love with a host of different, attractive women.
