many years. Age well? Hell, it may as well be in current release, it's just as spot-on in its humor and satire as ever it was.
I've never been a Barbara Streisand acting fan until now: she deserved an Oscar for her portrayal of the machine-gun mouthed street-walker. And George Segal never had as good a role, the perfect schmuck-foil for Barbara.
You want great dialogue which equals any from the Golden Age of Comedy, those incredible screwball comedies of yesteryear? Look no further. The entire film brilliantly is written and Streisand especially shows a comic timing and nuanced acting skill which, considering how seldom it is equalled, is harder than dramatic performance.
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had a faintly similar hit with, "Pretty Woman," but is doesn't come close to this gem.
Certainly this should rank with the greatest of all American comedies.
Follow Ups:
Many great moments in this film. The writing and the acting by Barbra Streisand are both outstanding. I especially liked the moment in the beginning of the film where George Segal is reading his story to Barbra and it starts out something like "the sun spits it's early morning..." They argue for half an hour about whether the sun can spit or not. And they make it funny.
