This film is far, far superior to earlier Balabanov films though it also is extremely violent. Supposedly based on a true story involving smuggling, bootlegging, murder, and revenge involving high-ranking bureaucrats and police. This film moves along at a breakneck pace and has the flavor of Tarantino but with a severe social and political commentary on 1984 Russian society. The killer is brilliantly portrayed by what must be one of Russia's best dramatic actors: he commands the screen in his portrayal of the most menacing psychopath since John Doe in "Se7en."
