In Reply to: RE: "Heaven's Gate," by a considerable margin, is inferior to EWS. nt posted by tinear on August 12, 2009 at 13:35:56
Yes, it's a bad movie but, at least for this movie fan, EWS is worse.
We agree that they are both stinkers.
Do you think EWS would have derailed Kubrick's career the way that "Heaven's Gate" did Michael Cimino's? I thought Kubrick was done after the deadly dull "Barry Lyndon."
Follow Ups:
dull as I found it was years ago. Still, it does have to overcome Ryan O'Neal as the star and no film could pull that off. I think, however, it has aged better than the immensely better received--- at the time--- "Tom Jones." It, as you recall, starred the young and irrepressible Albert Finney.
just a dull one. I don't think O'Neal is a bad actor but he was a poor choice for the title role. The critical reaction was almost entirely negative and its box office was poor. The film was a disappointment. It is, quite possibly, a standard bearer for set and art design, lighting, costuming, and photography. The film just looks sumptuous and also, when need be, appropriately grubby and gruesome. It needed better pacing and a strong lead."EWS" is a film I don't like at all. Period.
Imho, "Tom Jones" is not a classic but certainly a very fine film.. It was considered rather "adult" for its time and, of course, made Albert Finney a star. Would that an actor with his power had been cast in "Barry Lyndon" instead of O'Neal.........Jeremy Irons comes to mind even though he was probably too young att.
