practicing their English is ridiculous instead of amusing. I mean, the guy has been speaking perfect English throughout the entire film, but all of a sudden he's reduced to 'vatch, vat vatch' when trying to ask the time. The use of English in this movie worked well because everyone spoke English, without phony German/French/Whatever accents, so a tone of reality was maintained throughout-except, of course, in the above-mentioned scene.
I know, a small point perhaps, but there ya' are.
As an aside, I always make of point of mentioning Helmut Dantine, the actor who played the young guy whose wife was ready to screw Renault in order to get those exit visas. Though he had a decent acting career, his greatest achievement was his anti-Nazi work in his native Austria when he was a teenager, which earned him a stint in a concentration camp. Talk about having the strength of your convictions. And he was the father of one of my best friends.
