Flaherty's amazing camerawork offers a non-stop, pulse-pounding view of the cruelties of the violent, open sea from the first amazing scene of a small rowboat, manned by three desperate men, as it attempts to come ashore through towering waves that smash into froth upon threatening rocks. There is nothing like this in all of filmdom; a mesmerizing portrait which, though actually dramatized, is amazingly realistic. The viewer is given no respite as the characters go from one sea-swept adventure to another. Brilliant cinematography, equally clever editing, and perfect casting of the main three figures made this an instant classic.
Robert J. took two years to film it, relocating his family to the very island and even mounting a small film studio wherein he developed the film.
I've seen his other two classic films but this one now is my favorite.
