I never smoked but I remember doing alot of drinking in the 70s and early 80s. We drank at lunch and, usually, went to a bar after work. This was every day of the week. It was part of our business world. I was in my 20s and early 30s then. When I got older it began to be too wearing on the body. Most of my friends and colleagues came to the same conclusion. Unfortunately, some didn't.

... working in IT development and at the BBC around 1980 and 4 or 5 pints of beer at lunch was NOT unusual, then straight to the pub after work.
It's adrenaline got them through.
That and the prescription drug/coke/dope entertainments so many gathered en route.
And people thought we were extreme in the music business!
That's how it was for us too (engineering) in the same period. And lots of full ashtrays at the end of a day, though IIRC most didn't smoke as it was more common for women to do it at that time (not so many women in engineering then). People who complained about smokers were considered trouble-makers and largely ostracised as "no fun". Didn't treat women at all like in MM though, that is a significant difference by 1980.
Anyway the thread inspired me to watch the MM S1 BD again, been more than a year. Another big diff I noticed from then and now is the way children were treated (I was about the age of Draper's son at that time). At least compared to in these parts. Watch the birthday party episode, possibly the most intentionally blatant "this was then" episode of the whole series. Tons of things that would have a 30-year-old mother aghast.
