We can all relate to the beginning but after that UP was no more relevant than any saturday morning cartoon. It got really weird. At least you rented it. I made the mistake of a blind buy after reading reviews claiming it was better than Wall-E, which I enjoyed and thought was almost as good as Ratatouille, Pixar's masterpiece.
In the case of both Wall-E and Up, the first few minutes of each film functions almost like a self-contained short animation. Wall-E was able to take its introductory scene in an interesting, relevant direction while Up was out to lunch. I wonder if Pixar's approach now is to get its animators to draft a short scene and see if it inspires a longer story.
