It was an actor's show. Although the plots were formulaic episodic TV crap, his considerable talents shone though. Paired with Robert Lansing, they were really good together.
Follow Ups:
As I recall Woodward took a hiatus from the Equalizer to recuperate. Robert Mitchum filled in for him for a number of episodes as a slightly deranged former agent who needed the work and owed him favors. Woodward did come back to the series after a couple of months, but with an obviously less strenuous work schedule; the physical action scenes were toned down a little and his rogue sidekick Mickey Kostmayer (Keith Szarabajka) got a lot more screen time.I really liked that series, even as formulaic as it was on occasion (not bad for mid-80's TV by any standards). Edward Woodward's acting is what set The Equalizer apart.
