"Maborosi," "After Life," "Nobody Knows," and now, "Still Life."
"Still Life" is very much inspired by the films of Ozu; a couple return to visit their family on the fifteenth anniversary of the tragic death of the oldest son. The subject of the film is how individuals cope with wrenching pain and suffering and the film avoids most of the melodramatic flourishes which sink most similar efforts. Still, it is far beneath the previous 3 Koreeda films. If you're a strong fan of this brilliant director, you'd feel that even a modest attempt of his is worthwhile---- as I do. A quiet, meditative film which shows quotidian Japanese life and the turbulence between the generations.
