his newest film, "You, the Living," is outrageous, hysterically funny, and the most potent satire of modern life in decades.
Three scenes are as funny as any I've ever witnessed: a man demonstrating one of the oldest of parlor tricks; a woman making love to an accountant; an obese biker couple haggling in a park, a bar, and then at the in-laws.
Visually, you immediately know you're in Andersson world, the cinematography is pared of all "technique", the characters depicted as individualistically as in a Magritte painting.
If you haven't seen (and it is an even better film) his first film, "Songs from the Second Floor," catch that first, if possible. Together, they showcase one of the most original, brilliant film minds at work today.
It is astonishing to think that Sweden bred both Bergman and Andersson but this also is a good lesson for the pigeon-holers amongst us.
