story of two con men who prey on mine workers and then escalate the violence of their crimes, comes the equally disturbing, "Blind Mountain," the second part of his planned trilogy.
A beautiful young city woman is deceived into traveling to the country for a job but is kidnapped and sold to a man in a very remote mountain village. To her horror, she finds that the other young wives in the village also were brought and bought against their wills and that, according to them, escape is impossible. In fact, one of the women was crippled as punishment for one such attempt. Undeterred, the new arrival begins to protest, doing everything in her power to escape and fight against the family and the villagers that plead with her to acquiesce.
In many primitive and poor parts of the world where subsistence agricultural life means female children are far less prized than males because of their relative weakness, the resulting scarcity of females has led to single men commonly resorting to rape, kidnapping, and purchasing of brides.
This story examines one such society through the life of one young woman but it very much is a dramatic story which leaves the viewer with few easy answers.
The cinematography, by a Taiwanese, is visionary and the lead actress, in her first role, deserves a world Oscar.
