I like Denzel too and enjoy post-apocalyptic tales, especially Road Warrior, The Omega Man and that wonderful episode of The Twilight Zone with Burgess Meridith; "Time Enough at Last".
I agree, the film didn't have a lot of substance, but like "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" it wasn't really necessary. I thought Denzel's plight carried the film well.

Follow Ups:
...I apply to films.
With this one, I think of a couple of more serious, but different films, like:
"An Education" - excellent acting if unbelievable premise/story, I'd have to give it a C. The main character, if not two, will be up for Academy Awards.
"500 Days of Summer" - entertaining, well done, if frivolous, a B-.
In light of these, "Eli" was at best a C.
It had no pretentions to be anything more.
...nor do I take these things very seriously. Most movies get one of three ratings from me: awesome, entertaining or sucked.I just have a thing for Eli type tales. I also think Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was one of the best movies ever made and have never yet been able to sit through Casablanca in its entirety. Just so you know where I'm coming from.
Thanks for your 2-cents ...no question more folks will see it your way.
