As we were going slowly through the site afilado found, we stayed away from Quiet Flow the Don. We remembered the film from the early years, when we all saw it on television... well, at least its general feel was still there. But as the list of To Be Seen shrunk, the Don rose to the top, and we finally clicked on it.
All I can say - we do not regret that mouse click. The film is very well made in all respects, and it is absorbing.
There are those here who love the epic films, and to them this one should be a real treat.
There is still unanswered controversy regarding the book's author. Most people familiar with the Russian literature has long adopted the notion that it was someone other than the "official" author - Scholokhov. There are many reasons for this, all easily found on Internet. But be it as it may, someone definitely wrote the novel, and there is no question about who made the movie, and he did his job well.
Follow Ups:
Millions love GWTW...I find it a bit tedious.
But I generally like Russian film, and I've not seen this. Epic seems to suit the Russian temperament rather well. I'm willing to give this a whirl. I assure you, I do not have a short attention span.
As with any serious film based in significant historic events, some familiarity with subject matter is a must. One will enjoy and understand the film much more, knowing a bit about the history of the revolution and cossack culture and tradition.
