I mentioned here a few months ago that it put me in mind of 'The Bicycle Thief' for some reason...I think it's just the honesty of the acting (living, breathing, really existing) that is shown in this film and the simple yet deeply complicated story.
Really brilliant film.
I much prefer this era of Yimou's work.

Follow Ups:
From Red Sorghum through this film his record really is brilliant.
Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, Raise The Red Lantern, The Story Of Qiu Ju, To Live, The Road Home, Not One Less...outstanding. Heroes and House Of Flying Daggers are quite striking, but not my favorites of his.
The Zhang Yimou productions for the opening and closing ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics were AMAZING.
