I thought The Hurt Locker was very good, if not great, very well directed and acted.
I also liked An Education a lot, very underrated IMO. I enjoyed Up. Avatar was beautiful to look at and not much else. I'm not sure what I think of Precious. The Blind Side was a crowd pleaser but a definite B type movie. Or more like a C movie. District 9 was interesting, but Moon gets my vote for best thoughtful SF flick of 09.
I can't summon up much outrage over BP noms and not much over this years winners because the Oscars patently have so little to do with the "best film" of any given year, an impossible assignment in any case. The Oscars are what they are - an industry function, more about film biz than film art. They do occassionally reward film excellence, but that's no certain thing.
I don't usually like, much less think well of, most BP winners. There are far more great films that did not win a BP statue (or weren't even evern nominated) than there are great films that did.
