I've thought about this for a couple of days before writing about it.
I went on a hot autumn day and was plunged into a grey perma-frost of endless twilight and occasional sunny days.
We all know the original title and THAT is what the film is about.
It is confrontational, not in full frontal nudity but in the plain way in which rape is portrayed.
The very ordinariness of the characters makes the abuse that much more shocking.
The violence is not glamourised (something I fear for a Hollywood remake) and as such it makes a much stronger point about a rotten cancer in the liberal/socialist ideals of the Scandinavians
There are a few minor plot points which seem unlikely, but (so much of life is and) given the high quality of the film, they're not worth wasting time over.
This is a great thriller and reminds me just how good Scandinavian cinema (and television) is.
To me it's a must see, but certainly one I preferred seeing alone.
