Indeed one must spend time remembering and reliving monumental films like that one. And then see it again some time later, as much of subtlety inevitably gets lots on the first viewing.
I would also suggest reading some materials on the writer and the controversy surrounding the authorship.
Follow Ups:
Stuhr guy's film better. There were plenty of emotional clichés in "Vinci," but still it didn't suffer from all the Hollywood crap in the plot and the lack of violence was refreshing: the action was cerebral, like the chess games the film showed.
Krakow looked like one of the most beautiful cities on earth.
The lead actress, however, looked like her nose had been broken one time too many.....
I also thought the second-lead male actor, the blond guy, was weak.
...which made it even more funny! But overall I liked it very much indeed, it was light and inoffensive, intelligent enough with strong male lead. So I put it in the Great Entertainer bin.
Take a look at the "Station" (Stacja) - another Polish film, not bad either, even if a couple points lower on the absolute scale.
