I don't get the impression that Tati was down on modernism at all, but he sure found it's self-important seriousness to be ripe fruit for the picking. The final morning scene seems to remind the viewer that despite the city's shiny and rather sterile new garb, it's still as much a circus as it ever was, complete with carousel, clowns and acrobats!
