Seriously, independent Canadian productions should be forced to bear the warning "Made in Canada - may cause excessive boredom" just as cigarettes packages bear a surgeon general's warning. Everyone knows all the talented Canadian filmmakers flee to Hollywood.
Follow Ups:
Some Canadian films you might like:
Maelstrom, The best film I have ever seen that was narrated by a Salmon.
waydowntown, If you liked the movie Office Space then you will probably get a big kick out of this - if not you still might!
Spider, Okay - it's a bit slow but it is a wonderful performance from Ralph Fiennes and has a beat
Sunshine, - Had some issues - should have been a mini-series not a cut down film - but it worked overall
Scanners (horror), One of the first exploding heads movies,
Videodrome,
Felicia's Journey(maybe the greatest serial killer movie of all time - certainly a helluva lot more realistic than Silence of the Lambs),
The Corporation (documentary),
The Sweet Hereafter,
Exotica,
A tout prendre,
Kissed (a film about Necrophilia - you have been warned),
Last Night, Dead Ringers and Crash (all by Cronenberg),
Leolo,
Naked Lunch,
"Emporte Moi" a very underrated and even more unseen film that was quite entertaining.
Margaret's Museum is just outstanding though it is a Brit/Canadian co production.
Not that I like all the films here and there are many other good ones but most of the above have as much merit as films from other countries.
I'd start with the Genie Award winners and try some out
Saw this based solely on Joe Morgenstern's review. He was reasonably positive but did state that he didn't want to come off as overselling it. Well, he did. I found the basic concept to be a modern retelling of a few old stories and drawing heavily from films like Alien and Blair Witch Project but in a really boring manner (maybe not as boring as BWP). I also thought the way the sexual attraction betw the "creation" and the "creators" was portrayed was kinda creepy.
As for its origin, about 5 min into the film I found myself thinking "This film is seems to contain a heavy Canadian aesthetic or style" but I couldn't put a finger on exactly what it was so I decided to stay for the ending credits to see if there were any clues. Early into the credits, there it was, a product of the Canadian Film Board. Maybe it was the hair styles or clothing or the dialogue or the idea that cutting edge biotech firms, hotshot biotechnologists and snowy climates are not a contradiction. I half expected a casual conversation about the NHL or maybe the characters making plans to go curling on sunday morning
Splice might be a good example of what happens when a govt agency becomes involved with popular-culture entertainment. Not the worst I've seen this year (Crash of Titans) but kinda dull and not up to expectations raised by a couple of reviews.
