What a fine film. The story telling holds up 100%, McGregor's role is a juicy plum, and Tom Wilkinson is always a champ. The problem is that once you know the ending you are kind of blown off course for full enjoyment. I would have to give it an overall 75% because the ending was TOO clever to let the movie ride on its production merits.
This was my third time to see it and if it weren't for the bonus features I would never have guessed SPOILER that this film has something in common with "Layer4Cake". (Prizes will be awarded.)
PS. Polanski is a fine film maker and now a peculiar, aged, little man. The "victim" wants to forget about it, he knows he did wrong, and his films are too good for him not to come back to Hollywood on good behavior.

Well-made and a return to form for Polanski, but I remember thinking the same about the denouement: "Uh, that's what all this intrigue was about??" But the very end of the movie was an indelibly memorable image.
The last shot is not how the book ended which leads to the point about another device in the film mirroring Layer4Cake.
