"Sügisball" from the Baltic republic of Estonia just might wipe that stupid smile off your silly face.
When things get tough, when there is no Christmas bonus and your dog keeps peeing on your carpet, it is great to realize things can be whole lot worse.
There is no surprise most films made in the post-USSR tend to be gloomy, sad and suicide-inspiring. They simply reflect the reality, which often is even less appealing than the films. Sügisball is no exception - at some point you will definitely start looking for a rope.
Still, I do recommend it, based on some interesting character studies and observations.

in understanding those Russian films?
Assuming you speak Russian (with a name like yours !)
In this one there are only few phrases spoken in Russian, but generally speaking - of course. The subtitles are necessary, but when you speak the language you see how pale and often just outright ridiculous they can be.
Of course when I watch a French or a German film I don't get that feeling, which might be a blessing! :)
The Estonian language is quite close to Finnish... which is to say it is rather unique. It is not a common knowledge that they are related to Hungarian.
The Estonian culture has always been very distant from the Russian, and the republic used to be a popular vacation destination for the people of the USSR.
