I found the ending bittersweet but ultimatley uplifting. I thought it was a beautiful film - to me it was absolutely riveting, especially the way the tension spiralled in the third act.

These people don't necessarily find their environment "depressing" in the way we middle class city dwellers might - which is one thing I feel the filmmakers got exactly right. They were never condescending to the folks they were portraying.

My mother's people are from an area fairly close to where the movie was shot. Some of those folks coulda been relatives...I recognized a lot in the films. They got it right IMO.

... to someone with knowledge of the setting. It certainly had an air of authenticity about it. The universality was already evident.

Definitely a writer (Daniel Woodrell), director (Debra Granik) and cast (Jennifer Lawrence et al) to keep an eye on.

The novel is widely available here and I see Woe to Live On was filmed by Ang Lee in 1999 as Ride with the Devil. Must investigate!
