shows that an intelligent film about killing, both senseless, random individual murder and state execution, needn't wallow in emotion, preachy diatribe, nor hand-wringing acting. The young actor portraying the disaffected, alienated murderer gives an acting lesson on how little can be more: for those accustomed to Hollywood mannerist acting, this minimalist approach will be shockingly effective because of its intimacy and naturalness.
This also is a second viewing and it retains all of its ability to shock, disturb, and puzzle.
This bears repeating: if you do not know Polish film, you are missing one of the world's great treasure troves.
