"Le Petit Lieutenant," Xavier Beauvois, comes this sombre tale of a small group of French Trappist monks, increasingly under violent pressure to leave their monastery during the Algerian uprising. Nothing exceptional about the film; Bresson need not turn over in his grave, fitful that another has created a beautiful and lyrical work to rival his best. But Michael Lonsdale gives a good performance, as do his fellow monks, and it is a thoughtful study of dedication, faith, and courage. I don't imagine a film like this has much of a chance in the US at this time.
