I watched it for the third or fourth time last night. Sure, it's a bit corny at times, and sure, it was watered down from the book (haven't read it, but so I'm told), but it was 1942 after all.
A great story about the binding of childhood friendship, and so well done in beautiful B&W.

Many year ago, before I'd seen the film, a friend told me that John Williams had (to put it nicely) "borrowed" from it when he did the score for Star Wars. I must say that the score does bear a startling resemblance to Star Wars.
