The film, to put it simply, is very good. Features the young Stéphane Audran, before she got married to the director and long before her The Discrete Charm tour de force. She is good, but she hardly dominates the wonderful ensemble. The films is as poignant today as it was in 1960 - which is far more than you can say of most films.

build up of disquieting foreboding, and a masterful but not overwhelming and intrusive expertise of cinematography and music: terrific! Chabrol is such a subtle master of the thriller genre that his skill evaded me for a long time. This is a great introduction. That Harley should have gotten top billing...
