I think the one I recommended is a bit better than "Hollywood 1940's wannabee 'noir' hackjob" but you are welcome to think that!

that the one you recommended is the only film adaptation of his works that he liked.

I liked the initial scene, but the rest I find it to be too 'talky', typical of 40's movies.
