That was my first reaction as well until I thought of it as a figurative representation of real world people. People working in sweat shops. migrant farm workers, slave laborors etc. The point being that we do already accept human carnage for the sake of convenience and cost effectiveness and those people do accpet their fate because they lack the basic knowledge and skills to rebel in any way.
