I have cable modem connection, about 15 Mbps transfer rate. What kind of "box" do you have? Currently I have a Roku 2 XS box, which sends 1080p video for all of the Netflix movies that are in HD, and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio for all of the movies that have 5.1 audio. Every movie that was filmed in widescreen has shown up that way.
Before getting the Roku, I streamed Netflix from a Samsung BluRay player that seemed to be getting source material at 720p and upscaling it. There was no problem with widescreen.
My guess is that something is amiss with the input settings on your flatscreen.

but so far the majority has been FS. I'm using a Western Digital box with plays flacs files. Upon initial setup it did tell me 720 was all I was going to get so I wonder if it is the box or the low transfer rate of my DSL. Still, not bad for what it is.
What speed DSL? I can only get a 3 meg line at my house and I don't have any issues with widescreen.
