In Reply to: RE: Anyone go and see John Carter (of Mars) over the weekend? posted by Raiderman on March 12, 2012 at 12:57:53
The previews make John Carter to be a terrible remake of Avatar. No mention at all that it's about Confederate Civil War soldier, no mention of third "overlords" at play. So the movie is actually better. Heck, my brother liked it better than Avatar. And you don't have to see it in 3D, I saw it in 2D during matinee show and felt that I was not missing anything (unlike Avatar).
To me though, this movie was made 10 years too late. Even though every movie from Star Wars, Matrix to Avatar borrowed concepts from the John Carter universe, having been released after all those moves, make John Carter feel if not remake, then definitely something you've already seen before. Here we have interplanetary travel, here's Dune-like world and natives, here is Star Wars scooter chase etc.
It's not a terrible movie, just something that doesn't touch the soul or remains memorable. I think as matinee show on a lazy weekend - it's worth seeing on big screen. Once the Hunger Games come out, expect for this thing to hit Rental in no time.
