As believable a story of survival as one could imagine given the genre. The music at the beginning definitely didn't hurt.

To your (great) list I'd add Return of the Living Dead. Very funny but at its core, quite serious, and my favorite zombie flick.

I'd also add American Horror Story. Unrelentingly dark and probably the scariest thing ever on network TV. I can't timagine Season 2 even approaching the scares of Season 1.
