You have a point:
First un-watchable half: apes waiting for nothing to happen, so bored they bash each other's heads in. Excruciating.
Second half: "evolved" apes grapling to climb over one another for the "prize", then epiphany. Puzzling yet gratifying too.
Conclusion: With "humanity" nothing changes but the technology, but still there is no denying HAL; (that was groundbreaking cinema... "Daisy, daisy...").
I think you're right about "Blade Runner" in that it has superior movement towards a finale that resonates more truly to convention. I love the poem prior to "time to die" - that was confession/communion and forgiveness to the Blade Runner, all in one - a magical moment.
I'm looking forward to seeing this final cut; Vangelis is one of my favorites (still have all his albums)!
