You might think so, but he intentionally deviated far from the book to tell his own story. For example, Kubrick drives a yellow VW and passes a wrecked red VW on the road. Steven King had a red VW in the book. Weidner suggests that it was Kubrick's way of telling King that he was wrecking his original version. Room 217 became room 237 (237k miles to the moon), dead daughter changed to twins -- like Gemini (the previous NASA program) etc. I go along with Weidner's assessments, which seem brilliant. (I differ on his opinion on the apollo missions).
The documentaries aren't for everyone, but for a certain crowd, they're great! He gives even juicier details about the shining when speaking in person though.
