...this production is mostly an examination of the ravages of substance abuse and the toll it takes on persons of different socioeconomic standings with some aeronautical disaster thrown in to set the stage and hold things together later on. I found portions of it fairly unpleasant to watch, esp the portrayal of the seamy aspects of addictions and the depths a person can fall to while denying anything is wrong. This is definitely not a light piece of entertainment and I suspect many viewer are going to leave the theater feeling a little beat up. For unknown reasons, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas came to mind at more than a few points in during the "film" but without attempts at fun.
Overall this was a fairly decent production but rather heavy and clearly not for everyone: a few couples walked out of a packed auditorium at less than 20' into it.

I agree with the vast majority of your review. As you could probably tell by my post I was sort of lost for words on this one. I had no intention of going to see this movie but my wife dragged me out. I had no idea what the movie was about when I walked into the theater and I was expecting a typical Denzel movie which it isn’t. You’re correct the first 20 minutes or so is rough getting through, in fact I said to myself Denzel must be on hard times to take a movie role like this but as the movie progressed from that point I realized there was much more going on. When I walked out of the theater I was numb and in hindsight I realize just the kind of performance Washington gave. You’re right this movie may not be for everybody but I think this is a movie that shouldn’t be taken at face value and that many more NEED to go see it.
