This is not a crime film, per se, but rather an exploration of several serious topics: what does society gain in continuing to punish a citizen who has served his sentence; in a society where the police regularly brutalize people, who are the true criminals; are individuals to be held responsible for the acts of the majority?
This is an Iranian film and shows the level of talent in their industry compares to any other: director and principal actor Rafi Pitts makes the inner fury and rage of Ali a palpable, white-hot reality.
This is a film that stands alongside, "The White Ribbon," and other recent great films.
Yes, it is a seething commentary on Iran (the censors must be either lenient or stupid), but it's as universally applicable as Kafka's, "The Castle."
