Hollywood blacklist, kind of self-imposed, because he would brook no interference in his films.
The wunderkind also helmed the very interesting, "The Lady from Shanghai," and, really late in his career, "The Chimes at Midnight," an interesting Shakespearean collection of Falstaff roles. At that point, his life had become Falstaffian.
