I don;t know if you remember Hot Shots but there was a character in it nicknamed "Dead Meat". Before his denouement, there were about 4 or 5 giveaways that his demise was immediately forthcoming. That's how I felt about Matthew's last night. First Robert recongnizes his contributions to Downton's financial rescue, then he has that incredibly smarmy scene with Lady Mary at the hospital at her bedside, you might as well had written "DEAD MEAT" in CAPS across his back after that scene.
Having said that, it was pretty f'n sad to see him go.
