Yeah, perennial Academy fave Tommy wore nasty makeup and died at the end(Philadelphia),so obviously deserved it over the performance Liam gave in Schlinder's List.
The very early bar scene in Schlinder's where he's sitting taking stock of the available shorties and then the reaction when the Nazis walk in,no dialogue, movement, just his quiet, controlled contempt contained more acting in that single scene than anything Tommy did in the whole film. Not to mention the later train scene where the trainload of Jews is being treated worse than cattle,Liam's dying inside, but makes spraying the prisoners down with a hose into a game to get the Nazis unwittingly to help, the wholetime hiding how desperate he actually was.
Follow Ups:
And even worse was Ralph Fiennes losing best supporting actor in Schindler's List to Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive??? Also Pulp Fiction (and Shawshank Redemption) losing to Forrest Gump. Taxi Driver losing to Rocky. Goodfellas losing to Dances With Wolves. Apocalypse Now losing to Kramer versus Kramer.
