scathing portrait of America. Perhaps the most withering one ever committed to film precisely because of its effortlessness.
Not just a social document, however, but a heartfelt look at love, family, and sacrifice: when you see a middle-aged worker, that is what she is in "real life." Same with the single-mother love interest. And the guy stuck in the dead-end job. The detective? Yup, a real life one and he'll make you reconsider how they've historically been portrayed in Hollywood films.
Soderbergh's magnum opus and easily among the best films of that year--- or any other in American film.
