...I've read a couple of reviews that explain the ending of the film.
It seems that Bullock is not really living since her daughter died and then she nearly committed suicide in the capsule.
She decides to live and rallies to save herself.
At the end when she sheds her spacesuit under water, she is reborn.
Next you see her exiting the water on her hands and knees in the mud, representing primordial ooze, then she stands tall on her feet.
Maybe less symbolic than "2001", but interesting nonetheless.
