Justifiable and the 30k is far far less than what the ship line would've had to pay in death benefits and/or insurance claims.
Follow Ups:
Note the $30k "vanished", after being handed over to the pirates, who were subsequently all killed/ 1 captured.
I distinctly remember the story in Time magazine at the time, complete with the graphic of the 3 snipers at the stern of the Bainbridge.
My only observation is the difference in the story line at the time vs. what was revealed in the story this week. I try to maintain a healthy skepticism at "initial reports" of anything, until much later. Usually it takes a year or 3 until a book comes out, or there's an investigative journalism piece later on.
The most infamous case might be the whole Jessica Lynch story, surpassed in disgust and tragedy only by the Pat Tillman incident.
