So I saw this with my son. I had to because we read the book together. I would give it a B. There are lots of things really well done and there are lots of things that I am unhappy that are left out. I'm not sure whether its better to have read the book or not because there is a lot of compression and missing elements which I just add in my mind while watching and I don't know how someone who hasn't read the book will take it. The ending part which I won't give away is the most disappointing as to how it was executed and compressed but they got the idea. So they did pretty well on the meat of the story but didn't stick the landing. I don't know how it will play to the public because the nature of the show is so different from normal sci-fis. Can't go into details but will be interested in the thoughts of others as they see it.
Follow Ups:
It was indeed compressed and edited. However it was a two hour movie already and I doubt that anyone who hadn't read the book would've wanted much more back story. My wife liked it and my 12 y.o. daughter loved it, and neither had read the book.
FYI: I too thought the ending was a bit weak, but not so much as to ruin the movie.
