I stumbled across a not-so-terrific B (must be a B-) flick, "Starcrash" the other night. A 1978 loser waste of scifi film; it had Gortner and a hunky babe named Caroline Munro in it; another B queen. Looking over the casting, I was surprised to see that Christopher Plummer was also in it, although I didn't recognize him. It was a new personal low for me in watching science fiction. The scifi label applies because the settings were space ships and other worlds; not because it engaged any out-of-box gray matter.
But here's the thing. I checked out Gortner on line and found that he was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary film in 1972, exposing the world of revival evangelism. His daddy hawked him out as an ordained minister when he was 4 years old. He grew up learning how to separate believers from their money. His pappy ran off with the cash when Marjoe was in his teens, at which time he started leaning toward the entertainment biz. He made several lower-case flicks and has been in and around the screens ever since.
His whole life is a B movie. Attached is a clip from the Oscar-winning doc flick featuring Gortner. He agreed to go on the revival circuit one last time so this movie could be filmed. Ironically, this may be the best film he was in.
