The better series, be it The Killing, Spiral, Orange is the New Black, and The Following manage to keep the fire going.
In case of The Following they meandered more than I would like, especially in the second season, but still, the average level was very good.
Quite to the contrary, the one-shot deals, from the gruesome discovery to the conclusion in less than one hour, irritate me to no end, they tend to be so simplified that they become a joke.
At the VERY minimum you can have 90 minutes segments, like many British shows have, there you do have some room, but 45, 50 or so minutes is painfully inadequate.
Follow Ups:
Probably not your thing, but this is a scifi, post-apocalyptic scenario that's in its 5th season; partly directed or produced for tv by Spielberg. His reputation was thought to guarantee a winner, but this serial has wandered all over the map without any resemblance to a destination. Can't figure out nuthin'. It wanders between the scifi/survival aspects and standard soap intervals. I think its partly because producers can't tell if they will get continuance or not, and partly due to a lack of ideas.
I'm glad you found one you like.
