You either like Jason Bateman's shtick or you hate it. I like it and in this movie he does it on steroids. He plays Guy Trilby who finds a loop hole in the Golden Quill Spelling Bee Contest rules that allows him to compete against all the other eighth graders and win. Lots of funny scenarios come up and when he gets to the final he faces torment from a precise Allison Janney while dishing out mental cruelty to eighth grade contestants. Bateman is traveling with his news sponsor (internet news) Kathryn Hahn who provides him with the most begrudging, dispassionate sex ever in a film.
The trick to this film is the pity dialog which is all Bateman ever does. Here's what he had to say to a mother . . . . (apologies to sensitive eyes/ears)
Guy Trilby: [to a mother who swore in the presence of Chai] Why don't you take your potty mouth, go locate your pre-teen cock-sucking son and stuff him back up that old blown-out sweat sock of a vagina and scoot off back to whatever shit-kicking town you came from!
Well, this is a film for Bateman aficionados. I liked it and it's not bad for a Red Box find.
